Methodology
Sourcing standard
Sourcing standard, in order of preference: official records (Congressional Record, presidential papers, court and agency records); party platforms and official statements from the party's own archive or the American Presidency Project; video or audio of the event; the original publication (op-ed, book with page, pamphlet, founding text in a scholarly edition). News articles may point to a source but do not count as evidence on their own. Quote-collection sites and paraphrases are never accepted.
Review process
Every quote is captured with an archived copy of its source and checked by a reviewer who did not write it up. The reviewer passes every item of this checklist:
- The verbatim text matches the snapshot word for word.
- The speaker, date and venue match the source.
- Camp at the time is correct for that date.
- A platform excerpt comes from the platform as adopted, not a draft or a proposed amendment.
- The display excerpt keeps the meaning of the full passage.
- The context note is accurate and gives what a fair reader needs.
- The anonymized text gives away nothing that names the speaker, party or camp.
- The stance tags match what the text argues, and the surprise rating is justified in the notes.
